<h2>What Is Unexplained Weight Loss?</h2>
<p>Weight loss will occur when you decrease your caloric intake, increase your ability to burn calories, or both.  As the nation struggles with an obesity epidemic, most people find themselves eager to lose weight using whatever method possible. For some, weight loss is not a good thing. Unintentional weight loss is a decrease in body weight that is not voluntary and it could be a sign of a serious medical condition.</p>
<p>Sudden unexplained weight loss needs to be investigated to determine the underlying cause, especially if it’s combined with any additional symptoms such as nausea, irritability, fatigue, respiratory distress, or headaches.  Unexplained weight loss can also be a sign of depression, so you may need to look at how you are feeling emotionally.</p>
<h2>Common Causes of Unexplained Weight Loss</h2>
<p>There are a number of possible causes of unintentional weight loss.  These include problems with the endocrine system, a gastrointestinal disorder, psychiatric conditions, neurological dysfunction and eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa or bulimia.   Nutritional deficiencies, infections and tumors can also cause unexplained weight loss.</p>
<p>Other conditions that may cause you to lose weight unintentionally include:</p>
<ul>
<li>Dental issues that make eating painful such as newly applied orthodontic appliances, mouth sores, or loss of teeth.</li>
<li>Diabetes</li>
<li>Depression</li>
<li>Malnutrition</li>
<li>Medications such as amphetamines, chemotherapeutic agents, laxative abuse, and thyroid medications</li>
<li>Drug abuse</li>
<li>Smoking</li>
<li>Undiagnosed eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa or bulimia</li>
<li>AIDS</li>
<li>Acute infections</li>
<li>Tuberculosis</li>
<li>Parasitic infections</li>
<li>Chronic diarrhea</li>
<li>Hyperthyroidism</li>
</ul>
<h2>Care for Unintentional Weight Loss</h2>
<p>The best way to treat unintentional weight loss is to make sure you are eating a nutritious and well-balanced diet and incorporating only a moderate amount of exercise into your daily activities.  If you think, your unintentional weight loss may be caused by oral or dental problems see a dentist.  If you continue to lose weight and are unsure about the cause, see your health care provider to be checked for an underlying medical condition.</p>
<p>Your health care provider will likely ask you a number of questions regarding your condition such as:</p>
<ul>
<li>When did first notice that you were losing weight?</li>
<li>How much weight have you lost?</li>
<li>Was your unintentional weight loss sudden or gradual?</li>
<li>Has your appetite decreased?</li>
<li>Have you recently changed your diet or introduced a new food into your diet?</li>
<li>How physically active are you?  Has this level changed recently?</li>
<li>What other symptoms are you experiencing?</li>
<li>Have you recently been ill?</li>
<li>Do you have any dental problems or mouth sores?</li>
<li>Do you feel nauseous?</li>
<li>Has your stress level increased?</li>
<li>Have there been any changes in your overall energy level?</li>
<li>Do you feel any occasions of uncontrollable hunger?</li>
<li>Has there been any change in your vision?</li>
<li>Do you feel constipated?</li>
<li>Do you have diarrhea?</li>
<li>Are you particularly sensitive to cold or heat?</li>
<li>Has your level of urination changed?</li>
<li>Have you experienced any hair loss?</li>
<li>What medications are you currently taking?</li>
</ul>
<p>These questions will help your health care provider determine if there is a medical condition or cause involved.  If necessary, you may be referred to a dietitian for nutritional counseling.</p>
<p>It may also be a good idea for you to keep a food journal for a few days to give you a better idea of what you are eating each day.  Look at any patterns (such as skipped breakfasts) that may be causing you to lose weight.  Focus on eating a healthy diet with organic wholesome foods such as fruit, granolas, nuts, pasta, rice, bread, smoked salmon sandwiches, and cheese to help you regain some weight.</p>

<p>Exercise is any kind of physical activity that gets your body moving. Walking, dancing, housework, and marathon running can all be considered exercise. In addition to stimulating weight loss, exercise helps to improve your strength, your flexibility and your daily endurance. Regular and consistent exercise also helps you feel better both physically and mentally.</p>
<h2>First Things First</h2>
<p>Before you begin any new weight loss and exercise program, make an appointment with your natural health care provider. Your doctor should examine your overall health and determine if exercise would be beneficial for you. He or she can also help you decide what type of exercise would be best for you and for the weight loss goals you are trying to achieve.</p>

<p>If I were asked, &#8220;what is the most difficult thing many people find to do when they start a weight-loss program?&#8221;, I would have to say right near the top of the list is this &#8211; they don&#8217;t drink enough water!</p>
<p>Few people realize at first just how essential water is to the success of their weight-loss program. In fact, the essential place of water in our diet extends to everyone &#8211; whether they want to lose weight, gain weight or stay the same weight! We all know we can&#8217;t live without water, but just why is it so important? Well there are many reasons. Read on and discover why water can help you lose weight and why it is your essential life-force.</p>
<p>Apart from 60-70% of your body being composed of water, water has an extensive range of functions essential to life.</p>
<ul>
<li>Assists digestion, absorption and assimilation of food. If you don&#8217;t drink enough water you can&#8217;t get the full benefit of nutrients in the food you eat.</li>
<li>Assists excretion of waste from bowel and kidneys. If you don&#8217;t drink enough water you get constipated and put your kidneys under stress.</li>
<li>Regulates body temperature. If you don&#8217;t drink enough water you compromise the evaporation process you skin uses to keep you cool.</li>
<li>Your blood is 92% water. This is your body&#8217;s transport system distributing nutrients around the body.</li>
<li>Body secretions and digestive juices are almost entirely water.</li>
</ul>
<h2>Why should you drink water when you want to lose weight?</h2>
<p>Water is a natural appetite suppressant . DO NOT underestimate the power of this statement. Lack of water can lead to over eating. You brain does not differentiate between hunger and thirst. So, when you think you are feeling hungry, your body may in fact be signalling to you that you are thirsty! If you are not consuming enough water each day and you feel hunger pains, chances are, your body really is crying out for water. In many instances people will find what they thought were hunger pangs were in fact, satisfied by water. Try it! You have nothing to lose, except some weight.</p>
<p>How do you know whether you are drinking enough water each day? Well the answer is not difficult. The average person needs around 6-8 large glasses every day.</p>
<p>Well then, how should you drink the 6-8 glasses per day? The aim is to drink water consistently. If you drink too much all at once or too fast, it will simply pass through you, with little or no benefit to your body.</p>
<p>If you are someone who enjoys the &#8216;taste&#8217; of water, then perhaps you could fill a 1 litre empty soft drink container with water the drink through it twice during the day. Room temperature or cold water, even warm as some people like &#8211; whatever you prefer. Place it on the desk at work in front of you as a constant reminder to sip continuously throughout the day.</p>
<p>Other people find they need a water &#8216;diet&#8217; to help them keep on track. So for you, here is a program easily followed to ensure you are well hydrated every single day.</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>When you wake</strong> up you will often be thirsty because your body loses water while you are sleeping through breathing and perspiration. Drink a large glass of water with a slice of lemon for zing.</li>
<li>Drink another glass of water <strong>with breakfast</strong> or a cup of herbal tea before setting off the day.</li>
<li><strong>Mid morning</strong> &#8211; snack on a piece of juicy fruit such as orange, rockmelon, watermelon, cantaloupe, honey dew. Have a glass of water and perhaps try a dash of herbal aloe juice which is wonderfully soothing to the digestive system.</li>
<li><strong>Lunch</strong> &#8211; think of soup or have a glass of water before your meal, or perhaps a herbal tea.</li>
<li><strong>Mid afternoon</strong> &#8211; While you are preparing your evening meal, drink a glass of water and snack on some crunchy fresh vegetables.</li>
<li><strong>Evening</strong> &#8211; Sip a glass of water before your meal with a dash of your favourite fruit juice for flavour.</li>
<li><strong>After dinner</strong> &#8211; before bedtime drink your final glass of water and sleep well!</li>
</ul>
<p>A few changes will happen when you start out with your water program. Obviously you may find that you need to &#8217;spend a penny&#8217; more often. Why? Because you body isn&#8217;t used to being well hydrated.</p>
<p>There is absolutely is no doubt about it. When you start drinking enough water regularly, there are great benefits. You may notice your skin significantly improve and even tired muscles will thank you. Many people find their energy is increased and constipation and headaches are reduced, as well as hunger pains.</p>
<p>Now here&#8217;s the really exciting part.many people notice a reduction in weight and centimetres, as their body&#8217;s water store become redundant and so decrease. If your diet has been one that did not provide you with adequate water, your body will have developed a pattern of storing water. It&#8217;s part of the body&#8217;s in-built survival mechanism &#8211; to store up the essential nutrients in short supply.just in case they aren&#8217;t available in the future. So if you don&#8217;t drink enough water, you are &#8216;conditioning&#8217; your body to store water. And water is bulk and unwanted centimetres.</p>
<h2>It&#8217;s so simple&#8230;drink water! 6-8 large glasses a day.</h2>
<p>How do you know if you are not getting enough water each day? This is a really important question because so many of us have deprived ourselves of water for years that we have become accustomed to doing without the full amount of water our body requires and we don&#8217;t recognise the symptoms of thirst.</p>
<ul>
<li>The most common symptom is headaches. A major function of water is to flush toxins from the body. Your brain is 75% water, so even being slightly dehydrated can cause headaches.</li>
<li>Poor concentration/fatigue. If you body can&#8217;t get rid of the toxins it will struggle and you will feel less energetic as your body diverts energy to deal with the toxins.</li>
<li>Constipation. Your body will divert water to more essential functions and as a result your stools will be harder and more difficult to expel.</li>
<li>Reduced urine output or dark urine. Did you know that up to 200 litres of water is passed through your kidneys daily? Without a fresh supply of water for the kidneys to filter waste products out of the blood, your urine will become darker.</li>
<li>Furry tongue or bad breath. If you don&#8217;t have enough water passing through the mouth to wash away food particles, bacteria can proliferate and result in that &#8216;furry&#8217; feeling or bad breath.</li>
<li>Skin. Your skin should feel elastic. When you pinch the skin on the back of your hand it should snap back instantly.</li>
</ul>
<p>Final thoughts. Caffeinated drinks cause the body to lose water. They are what&#8217;s known as diuretics as they cause your body to dehydrate. You will do your body an enormous favour by cutting back. For every cup of coffee you drink you will need to drink another TWO glasses of water to counter the diuretic effect. Explore the world of herbal teas instead, you may be pleasantly surprised!</p>

<h2>Weight Loss During Pregnancy: Morning Sickness</h2>
<p>Prenatal nutrition is very important to the health of both a mother and her growing baby.  Typical weight gain during the first trimester is about five pounds.  But many women do not gain any weight or experience weight loss during pregnancy due to nausea and morning sickness.</p>
<p>Weight loss during the initial trimester of pregnancy is not uncommon.  Morning sickness typically strikes between weeks 6-16, although for some women it may last throughout the entire pregnancy.  It’s commonly believed that the changing hormones in your body cause morning sickness.</p>
<p>While it’s good for a woman to gain weight at a steady pace during pregnancy, most studies show that the babies of women with severe nausea and vomiting develop normally despite their mother’s weight loss during pregnancy. As long as the mother is eating a wholesome diet and getting nutrition from all of the food groups, the baby should be just fine.  If there is a concern about the mother’s weight loss during pregnancy, an ultrasound can be used to determine if the baby’s growth and development are on track.</p>
<h2>Weight Loss During Pregnancy: Dieting</h2>
<p>Almost all health experts advise against intentional weight loss during pregnancy. A growing baby needs a good supply of organic food, protein, vitamins, minerals, and nutrients in order to develop.  Any effort that the mother may make to lose weight at this critical time could limit this supply of nutrients for her baby.  A baby that is malnourished could develop significant health problems both at birth and throughout his or her life.</p>
<p>It’s important to gain some weight during pregnancy.  The amount that you gain will vary depending upon your starting point.  It’s a good idea to cut back on foods that are high in empty calories such as sodas, sweets, and highly processed foods.  But you don’t need to worry about losing weight right now.  Just be sure that your diet includes a good supply of wholesome foods for both your nutrition and your baby’s.  And if you really do need to lose weight, strengthen your resolve to do so after your baby is born.</p>
<p>But what if you are already dieting when you happen to become pregnant?  Should you continue on your diet food plan or resort back to your old habits?  The answer to this question depends upon the type of diet that you are currently using.  For example, if the “diet” you are on right now involves eating more wholesome foods and cutting back on high calorie, high fat foods, then it’s a good idea to continue.  But if the diet you are trying is excessively restrictive, or limits any one particular food group, it may not give you the nutrition you need to support yourself and your growing baby.</p>
<h2>What Nutrients Are Most Important During Pregnancy?</h2>
<p>First and foremost, pregnant women need a good supply of folic acid to keep their baby healthy and reduce the incidence of neural tube defects such as spina bifida.  Many health care practitioners recommend that women begin taking folic acid supplements at least one month before they even try to get pregnant, and continue throughout the pregnancy.</p>
<p>Women also tend to have trouble getting enough iron in their diets, and this is particularly worrisome during pregnancy, when iron supplies are stretched thin as the body produces more blood to support the growing baby. They have raised the hopes of overweight and obese people who are desperately seeking a weight loss solution. But are they a new miracle cure or just another weight loss scam?</p>

<p>Just take a quick peek at a popular women&#8217;s magazine or the Internet, and you will likely find a slew of weight loss patches, all promising amazing results. These products are heavily promoted, readily available, and instantly alluring to the millions of Americans who are trying to lose weight. They make numerous, yet similar claims such as the ability to &#8220;melt 30 pounds in 30 days.&#8221; But these deceptive claims rarely live up to their promises. Here are a few of the most common brands:</p>

<h2>Too Good to Be True?</h2>
<p>Many weight loss patches claim to produce amazing results in as little as a few days or weeks. If this were the case, it would be an amazing medical breakthrough that could easily cure the epidemic of obesity and wipe out illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, and even some cancers. Do you really think that if such a product existed, it would be relegated to the back page of a magazine? Real breakthroughs in medicine are unusual. But when they do occur, they are splashed over national headlines and reported in scientific journals.</p>
<p>Most serious health conditions can&#8217;t be cured or treated overnight either. Obesity and weight gain are not disastrous, but nor can they be fixed in one day or even a few weeks.</p>
<h2>The FDA Weighs In</h2>
<p>The US Food and Drug Administration recently investigated a weight loss patch company. They unequivocally found that the weight loss patch was not effective at helping people lose weight. <p>&#8220;The patches, sold as part of a kit with appetite-control claims, have not been shown to be safe and effective, nor do they have approval from the Food and Drug Administration. <p>&#8220;In recent weeks, the FDA has learned of claims to consumers that these patches were FDA-approved or met FDA standards. As a result, FDA issued a statement to consumers clarifying that the patches were not endorsed by the FDA. The agency said that, in fact, no nonprescription patch delivering drugs or other substances through the skin had been approved by FDA.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;The makers of the nonprescription patches risked marketing them without studies to demonstrate their safety and effectiveness, and without FDA approval.&#8221;</p>

<p>Nine out of ten people with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes are overweight.  If you fall into this category, and if you’re overweight, trimming down could help you manage your diabetes.</p>
<p>Losing weight can help you look great and feel better about yourself.  However, for people with diabetes, the benefits of weight loss can be even greater.  If you already have diabetes, losing just 10-15 pounds may help you lower your blood glucose levels, reduce your blood pressure, and improve your blood fats. Losing this weight may also help you reduce the number and dosage of diabetes medications that you need to take.  Here are just a few of the benefits of weight loss with diabetes.</p>

According to the study, just 30 minutes a day of moderate physical activity, coupled with a reduction in body weight of 5-10%, produced a 58% reduction in diabetes.
